Mrs Waddell

           Welcome to Y1W

         Class teacher - Miss Waddell

Teaching assistant - Miss Boulton and Miss Rody

Our topic this half term is What should the 3 little pigs use to build their house? As scientists we will be identifying and naming a variety of everyday  materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, and rock and describing simple physical properties. We will be testing different materials using our senses and explaining what we have found out. We will also be looking at how to make materials stronger.

As readers we will be reading a variety of traditional tales using phonic knowledge and common words to help us.

As designers we will be making structures and models using different materials and looking at ways to make our model stronger. We will be drawing simple plans before making our designs.

We will be focusing on the British Value of Individual Liberty this half term which will also link to our Children's Rights:

I have the right to a good standard to living.

This half term as part of our diverse curriculum we will be looking at Andy Goldsworthy and Isambard Kingodom Brunel.

Goldsworthy is a British artist who works with nature to produce artworks. Using natural materials—snow, ice, leaves, bark, rock, clay, stones, feathers petals, twigs—he creates outdoor sculpture. Before they disappear, or as they disappear, Goldsworthy records his work in photographs.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel FRS was a British civil engineer who is considered "one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history", "one of the 19th-century engineering giants"
